Character Information: The most important thing to mention first and foremost is that Fallout's setting takes place in the far future (though culturally they're frozen around the 50's) after something called the Great War collapsed global societal structure and caused widespread radioactive pollution from every state capable of launching a nuke doing just that. Vault-Tec provided underground vaults as a pre-war defense in the case of a global disaster, though in reality they were used to test powerful technologies and were designed to function as a means to test the population in various scenarios. Because of this, MacCready's town is surrounded by constant mayhem; raiders, super mutants, radioactive zombies, military outfits, and slavers all battling it out constantly while everyone else gets caught in the middle. It's deadly chaos out there so it's no wonder the citizens of the cave town remain where they are with no plan to move location.
Here's a link on the general settingMacCready didn't know his parents and lived his entire life (so far) in a settlement called Little Lamplight. Little Lamplight's opening leads down a tunnel that comes to the entrance of a cave populated by children. Because of Vault 87 being so nearby and having had children literally knocking on its door screaming for help only to deny them access, the children of Little Lamplight have never trusted adults. Naturally they couldn't go far out on there own in the wasteland, thus Little Lamplight was born. The children's mistrust of adults grew so deep that whenever a child reaches the age of sixteen they're considered too old to stay, and thus they are kicked out and go to a place called Big Town, a nearby settlement where all the ex Lamplighters go. Though it's a terrible location as mutants, slavers, and raiders often attack it.
Little Lamplight came into MacCready's care when a little girl by the name of Princess began her reign as a tyrant abusing her power. Her mayoral run lasted for all of five minutes before MacCready punched her in the face and said that Little Lamplight needed a leader, not a princess. The other children liked this and due to MacCready's strong sense of leadership, his smarts, and his childish lack of fear, they declared him the new mayor. Since Lucy had saved MacCready's life once before when he was horribly injured during a cave in, she became his "second in command" and calls on her for important duties.
While MacCready and his people live a solitary life they still played a critical role in the greater scheme of things re: the events of Fallout 3. About Vault-Tec and Vault 87; it's the birthplace of Super Mutants and Centaurs. Its original experiment was scrapped and instead made into a researching center to test out F.E.V (Forced Evolutionary Virus) on humans in order to create a population capable of surviving the nuclear world. These experiments failed, and since this was not the original intent of the vault when a nuclear detonation directly above the vault caused damage from inside, the aggressive failed mutants escaped and thus began D.C's high mutant infestation. Naturally, this meant that Little Lamplight has to deal with fending off mutants fairly regularly. MacCready remarks to the Lone Wanderer (the protagonist) that they've become good at keeping them out, but they're still very much a problem. Now back to how MacCready helped influence the events of the game, the Wanderer's whole reason for visiting Little Lamplight was to retrieve the G.E.C.K. (Garden of Eden Creation Kit), a terraforming device that is said to be able to bring life back to the wasteland. However, the only way to do that is to get through Little Lamplight, and the town's hatred of adults doesn't allow the Wanderer immediate entrance. There are several ways for them to get in though and once they manage they can ask about Vault 87. Either by helping some of the kids or winning MacCready's slight favor he will give the Wanderer entrance into Vault 87 through a route called Murder Pass. This allows them to gain access to the vault and retrieve the G.E.C.K, and from there, the Wanderer is able to bring fresh water to the wasteland and MacCready can go back to looking over his settlement.
Personality:There’s no two ways about it. Within minutes of meeting this kid it’s obvious he has a foul mouth and a terrible temper. Combine that with an itchy trigger finger and you’ve got a bit of a pill on your hands. MacCready, or “Mayor MacCready”, as he’s known as by his people, can come off as someone who’s difficult to deal with. And he is — but that mostly applies if you’re an adult. With his and his town’s inherent mistrust of adults over the years, thanks to tapes documenting what happened to the original children of Little Lamplight, MacCready is extremely hostile when he comes across adults. He doesn’t let them come within twenty feet of his front gates without threatening to blow their heads off and demanding to know why they’ve approached. To him, adults are scummy and selfish, only looking after themselves, and don’t see children as anything worth protecting. They wouldn’t hesitate to sell out a kid in a second. And given the world they live in and the area Little Lamplight inhabits, surrounded by raiders and slavers, coupled with the town’s history, one can hardly blame him for this assessment. It's safe to say while he was a crass kid with a temper before he became the mayor, having this much responsibility definitely ramps that attitude up tenfold. He has to be strong and fearless for his people, especially considering their home is surrounded by super mutants and raiders, with a vault where said mutants were created right in the caves with them. There's no room to be a baby, even for a minute. Especially not with more and more children ending up on their doorstep.
But that’s looking at MacCready from the POV of the protagonist, and by extension, an adult. If you watch him interact with the other children you see a slightly different side to him. Sure, he’s still hardened and crass, but instead of seeing an asshole kid on a power trip you see someone who actually cares about his town, even if he shows it in his own funny little way. For example, he (albeit crassly) demands the others to watch their language around Sammy — one of the younger residents who is far more wide eyed than the older kids. While he talks about how his town isn’t organized, exclaiming that it’s “pure anarchy” and he wouldn’t have it any other way, he also makes it a point to state that it’s his job to keep everything from falling apart so that everyone can continue to survive and have fun. Because fun is super important when you’re a kid. He also heavily relies on his seemingly second in command, Lucy. Lucy is very medically adept for her age and when they were smaller and before MacCready was mayor she saved his life after he got injured during a cave in. It’s safe to say that was the beginning of a trust building between the two.
“That's my best girl! Keep them alive and keep them in line!”; he clearly values her as someone who can keep the kids who get hurt alive while also being tough enough to keep them from getting too rowdy and reckless when MacCready is too busy/can’t be bothered, so it makes sense that they would work closely together. In general, it’s something MacCready values in a person, which is why he would absolutely be comfortable leaving her in charge.
He doesn’t tolerate whining as he perceives it as weakness and he also doesn’t tolerate people who can’t pull their own weight. He’s very no nonsense about his town. If the Lone Wanderer brings a recently orphaned child (about 11 or 12 years old) to town and asks MacCready if he can stay he comments that he’s not a baby sitter. If the LW has favor with MacCready he’ll tell him that the kid can stay but he has to pull his own weight or he’s kicking him out and if he doesn’t trust the LW he flat out won’t take the kid in. Harsh, but being in charge of a town full of children isn’t easy and MacCready and the rest of town are hesitant about not just adults but the outside in general, evident when MacCready comments how people are spoiled by the outside world. It sounds crazy considering what’s going on out there but from a child’s point of view, sharing a cave with super mutants who are big, strong, and about 8ft tall while dealing with slavers capturing your people, naturally they’re going to think that they have it tougher than most. It’s common for the kids to get attacked by the super mutants and it’s even more common for them to get kidnapped by slavers when out scavenging or even on their trek to Big Town when they’re leaving Little Lamplight for good. With this perspective it’s no wonder MacCready thinks people out in the world are soft because he’s only ever know this cave and its struggles, so while he’s been through a lot for a child he still has a super narrow worldview. Adults don’t give a shit about children, outsiders are soft, Little Lamplight is the toughest and the best. Simple, really.
Overall he's a headstrong yet hard working and dedicated leader who cares about his people. He acts like a child in a lot of ways because quite frankly, he's still very much a child, but that doesn't mean he isn't capable of carrying the burden of responsibility. He can buckle down and take things seriously when his ass or his people's lives are on the line, and while he may not trust adults as far as he could throw them, he's a kid of his word and won't back down on a promise/deal if they prove that they aren't going to be shitty. He's capable of showing respect where it's due (for the most part), but the moment someone tries to demand it of him by default he won't have any of it.
